Overview

Information is Power. A Career in Library Science Awaits.

“Communities are increasingly turning to libraries for a variety of services and activities. Therefore, there will be a continuous need for librarians to manage libraries and help patrons find information.”

United States Bureau of Labor

Interested in becoming a librarian who collaborates with teachers and students to help promote research, literacy and technology skills? Trevecca’s master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) is unique because it not only provides a librarian endorsement to an existing teaching license, but also serves as a full degree in Library and Information Science nationally recognized by the American Association of School Librarians and the Council for Accreditation of Education Preparation.

As the only nationally recognized library science program in Tennessee, here’s how the MLIS degree will equip you for the future:

  • Receive the coursework needed to work as a librarian servicing children and young adults. Integrate technology into teaching while creating engaging student interactions. Gain necessary training to work with students from pre-K through 12th grade and use a variety of technologies in the library and classroom setting.
  • Learn how to provide professional development in instructional design and select resources appropriate to library users. Our MLIS program transforms classroom teachers into school library leaders in technology, instruction and information specialization.
  • Think outside the box. An MLIS degree can also be used outside a traditional library setting to help you expand your reach as a teacher, professor, website developer, instructional designer, writer, researcher, digital developer and curator and more.

What you can expect from the program:

  • It’s fully online. Trevecca makes it easy to earn your MLIS degree according to your unique schedule. Students focus on one class at a time, with access to courses anywhere, anytime—24/7. Complete the 30-credit hour degree requirement in as little as 15 months.
  • It’s a team environment. We utilize a cohort-based online program, meaning you complete your degree alongside a group of other students working toward similar goals. Your online classmates will provide the support needed and help you grow your professional network so you can get the most out of your experience. We believe learning happens best in community! Project-based coursework that integrates emerging technologies is a hallmark of the program.
  • It includes direct access to faculty. Our professors are dedicated to making lasting connections and providing you with the tools needed to achieve a competitive edge in a growing job market.

Trevecca alumni with a master’s degree in Library and Information Science have made an impact on the library community both locally and nationally. Outstanding graduates include:

  • Stephanie Ham, director of school libraries for Metro Nashville Public Schools and American Library Association (ALA) chair of supervisors of library programs.
  • Hannah Little, Webb School of Knoxville librarian and ALA blogger.
  • Becky Jackman, recent president of the Tennessee Association of School Librarians (TASL) and American Association of School Librarians (AASL) council representative.
