Professional Communication

Overview

Professional communication is a new and growing field of study within the communication discipline. Organizations recognize the need for employees who are knowledgeable in the use of communication strategies and technologies. The Associate of Science in professional communication benefits students in multiple ways. The coursework equips students with skills in written, oral, visual and digital communication necessary for a workplace. The program also provides enough flexibility for students to be able to tailor their coursework according to their areas of interest. Perhaps most importantly, this program prepares students to complete a four-year bachelor's degree.

After successfully completing this degree, a student will:

  • be able to develop and effectively deliver a clear and well-researched argument;
  • be able to deliver an effective oral and written presentation using digital technology;
  • be able to work productively on an assigned project both as an individual or as a cooperative team member;
  • have the academic foundation for further study in a related chosen field.

The Associate of Science in professional communication is designed to equip students with a wide variety of communication skills, yet gives them considerable flexibility in tailoring their study to their specific career interests.

Depending on the four elective courses chosen as part of a student’s major study, he/she will be able to complete a Bachelor of Science in communication studies by taking between 10 – 14 additional credits in communication and would be able to complete a Bachelor of Science in organizational communication by taking between 11 – 14 additional communication credits.

Depending on the three elective courses students choose as part of their major study, they will also make progress on academic minors in interpersonal communication, multimedia journalism, media arts & studies, dramatic arts and film production, as well as several minors in other departments/programs on campus (i.e., leadership, business, and information technology).
