Overview
Move, Heal, Help and Strengthen
As ongoing advances in health care enhance the quality of life for all ages, there’s never been a better time to pursue a career in physical therapy (PT).
Physical therapists play a key role in helping patients successfully recover from surgeries and procedures. They also facilitate in strengthening and healing muscles after an injury, thereby reducing the risk of a future incident or ongoing pain. Physical therapists function as vital members of the health care community as they educate patients on their conditions, promote their ability to move, reduce pain and disability and restore function. They also can prolong a patient’s wellness through preventative measures.
Earning a bachelor’s in exercise science with a concentration in pre-physical therapy can lead to many diverse professional opportunities within the physical therapy profession. As students advance in their career, they can choose to specialize in the area of orthopedics, sports therapy, pediatrics, geriatrics or even neurological or cardiovascular physical therapy, depending on their interests. They can work in a variety of environments, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, private offices, rehabilitation clinics, assisted living facilities, educational institutions, sports centers or home health agencies.
Trevecca’s program includes coursework in core science classes, as well in topics such as nutrition; therapeutic modalities; exercise physiology; fitness assessment and prescription; therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation; sports medicine and more. The curriculum also requires each student to complete three unique practicum experiences in order to interact with therapists in various clinical settings and gain exposure in the field. The degree fully prepares students for graduate school and its prerequisite requirements.

CHE 1040
The first course in a one-year sequence for students planning further work in chemistry. Topics discussed include atomic structure, periodic relationships, bonding, molecular structure, chemical reactions, thermochemistry, solids, liquids, and gases. Lecture and lab. Fee charged.
General Chemistry II
CHE 1050
The second course in a one-year sequence for students planning further work in chemistry. Topics discussed include solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. Lecture and lab. Fee charged.
Basic College Physics I
PHY 1010
An introductory treatment of mechanics, vibration, wave motion, sound, and fluids. Emphasis will be placed on the conceptual aspects of these topics with many illustrative examples drawn from biology and medicine. This course does not require prior knowledge of calculus. Mathematics above high school algebra is not required. Lecture and lab. Fee charged.
Basic College Physics II
PHY 1020
A continuation of PHY 1010 emphasizing heat, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, geometrical and physical optics, topics in atomic, quantum and nuclear physics. Lecture and lab. Fee charged.
Behavioral Science Statistics
PSY 2060
An introductory course in statistics. Topics include basic measurement concepts, frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and variability, the normal curve, standard scores, correlation, regression, random sampling and probability, binomial distribution, hypothesis testing, t test, ANOVA, and nonparametric tests. Introduction to SPSS is also included.
Outcomes / Careers
Trevecca’s pre-physical therapy concentration within the exercise science department offers all classes required as a prerequisite for application to graduate school and is geared toward students who aim to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy (DPT). The rigor of each class will challenge students and give them a glimpse into the expectations of graduate school. Students work closely with their academic advisors, who serve as mentors and ensure coursework meets specifications for the student’s graduate school of choice.
