Donald Harvey, Ph.D., LPC-MHSP is a professor of graduate counseling. During his time at Trevecca, he has established the master’s program in marriage and family therapy and co-created the doctoral program in clinical counseling, teaching and supervision. The author of 10 books on counseling-related topics, he has also practiced as a therapist for more than 45 years; supervised developing therapists in agency, academic and licensure settings; and spoken extensively at national conferences. Dr. Harvey earned a doctorate in marriage and family therapy, with a specialization in couples work, from Virginia Tech, and he is an AAMFT clinical fellow and approved supervisor. Along with wife Jan, who is also a therapist, Dr. Harvey has worked extensively with intensive psychotherapy experiences for clergy couples in crisis. A strong proponent of therapist self-care and an active fisherman, he believes that “alternative passions do not compete with a therapist’s professional life, but actually complement it—they are necessary in bringing balance and preventing burnout.”
